This article will walk you through how to get the most out of our insurance filtering feature.

Insurance filtering helps sending providers make sure that their patients get referred to a receiving provider who accepts their insurance. When used correctly, this feature can greatly improve follow-through rates and reduce confusion for staff, providers, and patients!

Overview

You’ll find the insurance filtering options on the same page where you schedule the referral, right above the provider calendars.

To use the filter, simply select the appropriate insurance carrier from the drop down menu and then select the patient’s insurance plan in the next dropdown menu.

You’ll notice that the insurance plan options do not become available until after you select a carrier. This is to reduce the amount of plans to search through before finding the right one. Only the plans associated with each specific carrier will appear.

Once you’ve made your selections, the visible providers will change to display only those who accept the selected insurance plan. You will then proceed to schedule the referral as normal.

Helpful Hints

Providers can access a patient’s insurance information by clicking “Show More” in the patient demographic section of the screen.

From there, a separate screen will appear with details regarding the patient’s insurance carrier and plan. Providers can then use this information to narrow their search results and only view the receiving providers who accept the patient’s insurance.

You will also notice a small, green note labeled “Takes insurance plan” that indicates which provides accept that patient’s insurance plan.

IMPORTANT ADDITIONAL NOTE

One important detail to note is that the carriers and plans from our database may occasionally appear with slight discrepancies compared to how a user might normally see them. For instance, we may use acronyms for certain plans while the user or the user’s organization does not. In these instances, the user should not worry! The differences are minor and will not affect the usage of the feature.

Here is an example of the kind of discrepancies one might find:

If you are used to seeing "BLUECROSSBLUESHIELD," but on Alluvium you see "Blue Cross Blue Shield," or you notice in the patient’s information screen that their insurance is listed as "BCBS," you can safely assume that they are the same thing and that your patient will get to the right provider! This specific case mentioned is merely an example and other unique cases will likely emerge on occasion.
